In this elegant installment from the series, the ever-chivalrous Hercule Poirot (David Suchet) is rewarded with more than just gratitude when he helps a woman alight from a cab outside his dentist's office. When the popular dentist is gunned down, a murderous chain of events ensues and a broken shoe buckle becomes the key to solving a deadly web of deception that only Poirot can unravel. The Adventure of the Clapham Cook (1989) (S01E01)

inglês Since I had already seen the last episode, it was time to watch the first one as well. This series set a high standard right from the start, which shows not only how good the chosen direction was, but also that the source material is so excellent that there's a lot to be gained from it. The fact that it’s a TV adaptation doesn't matter at all here, nor does the time period in which the story takes place because it all works together. Moreover, Poirot is a truly unique character. ()

Murder in the Mews (1989) (S01E02)

inglês The beauty of detective stories is that what appears one way at first glance is actually completely different, and perhaps even more different because there can be multiple twists. Murder in the Mews is precisely one such case because, although everything seems clear at the beginning, it ultimately turns out to be different, only to change again later. I enjoyed this, even though the plot isn't all that action-packed. ()

The Adventure of Johnnie Waverly (1989) (S01E03)

inglês It's a bit of a weaker episode, but perhaps only in the conclusion, which I somewhat anticipated. However, the creators nicely revitalized the film with the relationship between Poirot and Hastings, particularly the episode with the car, which is absolutely fantastic. The tension is excellently maintained regarding whether or not a kidnapping will occur, and why. The finale is a bit weaker, but definitely not bad. ()

Four and Twenty Blackbirds (1989) (S01E04)

inglês Mistaken identities simply belong in detective stories. Here, what I like is that right from the start, it's clear that there has been a case of mistaken identity, but what's actually more intriguing is the fact of who switched places with that person and why. In this case, it works very well, and despite the slow pace, the story is interesting enough. ()

The Third Floor Flat (1989) (S01E05)

inglês It looks completely innocent at first, but then it turns into a very interesting detective case that kept me entertained pretty much from start to finish. It's that type where you just have to know how everything unfolded and why, even though you essentially don't have the opportunity to identify the murderer's identity, just like Poirot didn't in the play. Of the first five episodes, this one entertained me the most. ()

Triangle at Rhodes (1989) (S01E06)

inglês When I look towards the East, it's something that immediately piques my interest. Well, Greece isn't exactly the Orient, but still, it gives Poirot an entirely new dynamic. In that environment, especially on the beach, he's very comedic, even without faithful Hastings by his side. Moreover, the detective case itself is excellent, mainly because its resolution truly surprises. ()

Problem At Sea (1989) (S01E07)

inglês Poirot in a very exotic setting again, on a boat and with great characters. David Suchet clearly enjoyed the final revelation, and so can the audience, even if his girlfriend essentially told him how it all was at the beginning. It had great logic, so I believed it. And she was right. An excellent episode. ()

The Incredible Theft (1989) (S01E08)

inglês Hercule Poirot enters higher circles, where it's about war and the possibility of defeating Germany, at least in the air. It's nice to see how Poirot doesn't belong among those people, yet in reality, he is much more intelligent than all the industrialists and their pompous wives. Still, I wasn't that impressed with this episode. ()

The King of Clubs (1989) (S01E09)

inglês I enjoy stories from behind the scenes of the film industry, especially because they are often very imaginative. Agatha and her character Poirot managed to maintain this in the story, which is brilliantly crafted, even though the twist itself may be somewhat disappointing. The scenes in the studio are quite clichéd in places, but they're still entertaining. ()

The Dream (1989) (S01E10)

inglês Some people might deserve some form of punishment for their behavior, but still, death is a punishment that not everyone considers acceptable. Hercule Poirot never accepts murder, which he makes clear, and so he investigates the murder of an industrialist who treated his employees very badly. An excellent variation with mistaken identities and how the crime is brilliantly reconstructed. ()

Peril at End House (1990) (S02E01)

inglês The film was originally split into two parts but is better enjoyed as a whole. Poirot and Hastings get along great again, but more importantly, there's a story with a great script. It twists and untwists in such a way that only at the very end will you truly know how things were and are. And yet, it fits together perfectly, and the story is sufficiently suspenseful. ()

The Veiled Lady (1990) (S02E02)

inglês From the beginning, it was somewhat clear who the villain would be, but the way the story unfolded was interesting enough to keep me engaged until the end. The museum chase is quite entertaining and I have to say that I really like how the setting keeps changing throughout the series. Poirot looks good here. ()

The Lost Mine (1990) (S02E03)

inglês Again, something a bit exotic. A little bit of Asia this time. It's nice how Poirot manages to get essentially everywhere, even without leaving his place. What's good about this episode is how it's connected with the game of Monopoly, which Hastings and Poirot enjoy playing together. The reveal of the killer is again very effective, mainly due to the interesting setting. ()

The Cornish Mystery (1990) (S02E04)

inglês The setting of a small town is fully utilized for the needs of the short story, and the local details are incredibly beautiful. I also mean the people and how they look at a person and their crime, even if unproven. Hercule Poirot once again displays a slightly rough sense of humor, which works, giving us an original solution to the crime. ()

The Disapperance of Mr. Davenheim (1990) (S02E05)

inglês When you combine a good detective story with a great comedic twist, which this time revolves around a bet, where Poirot has to solve a case without leaving the house, you get a fantastic story that entertains you. Even if you figure out what’s happening earlier, you'll still enjoy the jokes and magical numbers. Overall, the film is a great combination of everything. ()

Double Sin (1990) (S02E06)

inglês I guess I was a bit disappointed that it was somewhat simpler and I figured out the point quite early, but that definitely doesn't mean this installment wasn't entertaining. On the contrary, there's a great moment between Poirot and Japp, of which the latter isn't even aware. This turned out really well, just like Poirot's indifference. Even in the background, he's perfect. ()

The Adventure of the Cheap Flat (1990) (S02E07)

inglês Right from the beginning, it's clear what tone this installment will have. It's very comedic, even in the sense that there are beautiful caricatures, especially the FBI agent who is just exemplary. Poirot also excels in being entertaining, as just the opening scene in the movie theater speaks volumes about him. The story is also good, serving as an excellent and functional intertwining of events. ()

The Adventure of the Western Star (1990) (S02E09)

inglês It's slightly overstuffed, and in the end, it might be a bit disappointing because it's a story about nothing that isn't perfectly concluded, and that is a shame. I expected there to be a little something more to it. However, it remains true that even so, it's fairly good and it captivates with how people can sometimes manipulate even themselves. ()

The Mysterious Affair at Styles (1990) (S03E01)

inglês It's certainly one of the best Poirot stories, perhaps because this is where Poirot and Hastings begin their time together. It's great in the beginning until Poirot is gone, but once the murder happens and he shows up on the scene, it's just great. You enjoy his charisma, but also how he manages to solve the case in the end. It’s beautifully tangled, where you really don't know until the last moment. ()

How Does Your Garden Grow? (1991) (S03E02)

inglês A superb story that illustrates how crucial it is in detective work for a person, namely the detective, to recognize all the clues and notice everything. Hercule showcases this with a great sense of detail, and he remains skillful and witty. It's truly hard to imagine Poirot any other way than with the face of David Suchet, who imparted him with charm and magic. ()
