Biografia
Maestro Ennio Morricone was born in 1928 in Rome. He studied composition with Goffredo Petrassi (1954) at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory, from which he had already received a diploma in trumpet (1946) and band orchestration (1952).
Morricone is without doubt the leading Italian composer of our era, boasting the widest range of experience in his field. He has written musical scores for theatrical plays and revues, for radio and for television. In the early days of the record industry he raised the role of arranger to a hitherto unimaginable level of quality, making a substantial contribution to the success of numerous singers.
He debuted in cinema in 1961 with Luciano Salce's "Il Federale" and soon his name started to be linked with artists such as Leone (from 1964), Petri Pontecorvo, Bolognini, Bellocchio, Pasolini, Montaldo, Patroni Griffi and Tornatore. Among his most prestigious international collaborations are those with Polanski, De Palma, Joffé, Lautner, Carpenter, Molinaro. In recent years, other directors, including Rosi, Almodóvar and Zeffirelli, have been added.
He has received numerous awards and recognition in the course of his career as a composer for cinema: 10 Silver Ribbons; 9 David di Donatello (the last one received for his soundtrack for Tornatore's "The Unknown Woman" in 2006: 4 Baftas, 4 Golden Globes®, a Grammy and a career Oscar® in February, 2007. The RCA label recently published a tribute to the composer, a CD called We All Love Ennio Morricone, featuring esteemed international stars from the pop, rock, jazz and classical worlds such as Céline Dion, Bruce Springsteen, Andrea Bocelli, Yo-Yo Ma and many others.
In tandem with his work for cinema, Morricone has maintained a constant relationship with "classical" music, in which he has been one of the most active experimenters of the Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza group since the sixties. The catalogue of his work embraces an extensive and varied series of symphonic and chamber music for soloists or diverse groups. Among these are: the multilingual cantata Frammenti di Eros, with words by Sergio Miceli (1985); the Cantata Voce del Silenzio; the Cantata Vuoto d'Anima Piena; the Cantata for Europe, with words by various authors, and three concerts.
Morricone has directed various seasons of the National Academy Orchestra of Santa Cecilia; the Scala Philharmonic Orchestra, the National Spanish Orchestra (ONE), the London Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Orchestra of Munich; the National Orchestra of Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), the Rome Opera House Orchestra and the Budapest Opera House Orchestra. He also regularly directs the Roma Sinfonietta Orchestra, both for live concerts and for film music recordings. Since 1996, Ennio Morricone has been a Director of the National Academy of Santa Cecilia.
